Tips for Crafting the Candy Cane Christmas Ornaments

Follow the detailed steps and sew this easy candy cane ornament. It is stitched entirely by hand, using a running stitch and a whip stitch. You'll need to prepare felt sheets, scissors, a needle, and thread and sew these felt candy canes.

Tips for Hand Sewing with Felt

TIP for sewing with felt: Explore the felt sewing tips to help you while sewing felt. In this comprehensive guide, you learn what types of felt exist, what’s the best needle and thread for felt, how to trace on felt, and how to cut felt shapes.

TIP for holding pieces in place for sewing: Felt pieces can be pinned to the felt shapes to hold them in place until they are stitched.

Another option is to place a tiny dab of instant dry fabric glue on the reverse side of felt shapes and position them in place. I use Beacon Fabri-Tac glue for my felt crafts. Ensure you don’t place glue where you need to sew. It happens to me occasionally, and getting the needle through the dry glue gets really difficult.

How to Make Your Own Candy Cane Ornaments

Download the free template, follow this tutorial's easy steps and photos, and learn how to make the felt candy cane ornament.

  1. Use the free candy cane pattern to cut out all pattern pieces from felt. Visit the section above (Materials & Supplies for DIY Candy Cane Ornaments) to learn how to download the free PDF felt pattern.

  2. Join the two candy cane pieces with a running stitch close to the edge. Fill the felt candy cane with filling as you stitch. If you want to hang the candy cane as an ornament, sew in a string on top of the DIY candy cane. I forgot to do so and had to do it later.

  3. Take the red felt stripe and wrap it around the candy cane. I helped myself with a tiny dab of glue.

  4. Stitch the red felt stripe with a whip stitch.
