Five years ago, my husband's aunt made fabric Christmas stockings for us. They are so adorable! I love decorating the living room with these Christmas stockings during the festive season. But they have one disadvantage: there are no names and we never know which stocking is whose. As I design felt craft patterns and like Christmas stockings so much, I made my own felt Christmas stocking pattern, including personalization :)  And the best part? I’m sharing it with you for free! This Christmas stocking is not too large or mini, just about a medium size. This DIY stocking pattern is perfect for adding a personal touch to your Christmas decor. With step by step instructions, it is simple to make and can be customized to fit your unique style. But what if you don't have sewing skills? No worries! It is also possible to craft a no-sew stocking using this pattern. Whether you are a seasoned crafter or a beginner, this felt Christmas stocking pattern is a great way to bring the handmade holiday spirit to your house.

Happy felt holiday crafting!

Tips for Hand Sewing with Felt

TIP for sewing with felt: Explore the felt sewing tips to help you while sewing felt. In this comprehensive guide, you learn what types of felt exist, what’s the best needle and thread for felt, how to trace on felt, and how to cut felt shapes.

TIP for holding pieces in place for sewing: Place a tiny dab of instant dry fabric glue on the reverse side of felt shapes and position them on the stocking. I use Beacon Fabri-Tac glue for my felt crafts. Ensure you don’t place glue where you need to sew. It happens to me occasionally, and getting the needle through the dry glue gets really difficult.

TIP felt glue: Have you wondered what is the best felt glue? Find the findings of a test comparing 8 different glue for felt. I used a hot glue gun for the no-sew Christmas stocking.

How to Sew Personalized Felt Christmas Stocking?

Download the free pattern for the Christmas stocking and the free template for the alphabet letters. Up to six letters of a name fit on the felt stocking. If the name is longer than that, print the template smaller. Choose different colors of felt to make your DIY Christmas stockings, follow the instructions, and sew your adorable stockings.

Step-by-Step Felt Christmas Stocking Instructions

  1. Cut out all pieces: Use the free pattern to cut out all pattern pieces from felt. You'll need two stocking shapes, two cuff pieces, and felt letters for your name.

  2. Add felt or ribbon loop: To hang the felt stocking, you’ll also want to sew a piece of felt or ribbon to use as a hanging loop to the inside of the top of the stocking. I'll do it on the back shape. I’ll sew the loop with a cross to the stocking shape.

  3. Sew the edges of the cuffs: Sew the top and bottom edges of the cuff with a blanket stitch. You'll need to do so for both stocking shapes. I also tried to sew whip stitch but didn't like it as much.

  4. Position the letters: Position the letters of your name on the stocking's top shape. This will depend on which way you want the Christmas stocking to face when sewn. Note that up to 6 letters should fit. If the name is longer, then make the template smaller when printing it.

  5. Sew the letters: Sew the letters with a running stitch or a whip stitch.

  6. Complete the stocking: Join the front and back stocking shapes with a blanket stitch close to the edge (running stitch is a possible alternative).

Now that you've made your first felt Christmas stocking, will you make more? It surprised me what an easy Christmas craft this is. And it's even faster in the no-sew version. However, the embroidery gives it such a nice touch.

How to Personalize Your Christmas Stockings?

With this personalization ideas you add unique Christmas stocking features that will make your stocking looking special:

  1. Attach the name: I've personalized the stocking with the names of family members. You can also add initials, surname, or nickname. If you want to make your own alphabet letters, you can learn how to do so in the felt banner post. My letters are 144pt tall; however, the right size depends on your font.

  2. Embroider the name: Write the name with a fabric erasable pen and embroider it with embroidery thread. You might want to practice first on a piece of felt.

  3. Use stamps for a name tag: Make a hand stamp name tag and sew it to the stocking.

  4. Make the first initials using small buttons: Sew small buttons in the shape of the first initials.

  5. Iron on vinyl name or initials: Cut iron-on vinyl initial on your Cricut Maker and iron it onto the felt Christmas stocking.

  6. Add photograph: You can glue a photograph of each family member on a tag and attach it to the Christmas stocking.

  7. Attach a tag with a name: You can use leather, paper, or faux leather to make the tag. Making them with a Cricut Machine will make it really easy. You could also use a gift tag.

  8. Decorate with pom poms, pom pom trim, rick rack trim, or buttons: Place different buttons, ribbons, pom-pom trims, or pom poms onto the felt Christmas stocking. Try different placements first before gluing them or sewing them.

  9. Add festive shapes from felt: Cut out different shapes out of felt and decorate the felt Christmas stocking with them. This shape could be a snowflake, Christmas tree, star, gingerbread man, reindeer, holly leaves or different ornament shapes. You can sew them, glue them or use double-sided fusible interfacing and iron them on.

  10. Attach jingle-bells or pine cones: Adding jingle bells or pine cones is a cute way to personalize your stocking.
