Tips for Crafting Felt Candy Decorations and Ornaments

Follow the detailed steps and sew these easy felt candy ornaments. They are stitched entirely by hand, using a running stitch and a whip stitch. You'll need to prepare felt sheets, scissors, a needle, fiberfill, ribbon, clips, and thread and sew these felt candies. Find the step-by-step tutorial for the felt candy cane ornament in a separate post.

Choosing the Right Felt Material

When making candy Christmas ornaments, selecting the right type of felt material is essential. Opt for vibrant and festive colors that resemble various types of candy, such as peppermints, lollipops, and gumballs. The felt should be of good quality to ensure durability and a polished finish.

Assembling the Ornaments

Assembling the felt candy ornaments involves cutting out the shapes, layering pieces together, and securing them with hot glue, Fabri-tac glue, or stitching. Add details with glitter, beads, or sequins to make the ornaments more lifelike and visually appealing. When you’re assembling them, make sure to attach a loop of ribbon or string for hanging. I forgot this step many times.

Tips for Crafting with Felt

TIP for sewing with felt: Explore the felt sewing tips to help you while sewing felt. In this comprehensive guide, you learn what types of felt exist, the best needle and thread for felt, how to trace on felt, and how to cut felt shapes.

TIP for holding pieces in place for sewing: Felt pieces can be pinned to the felt shapes to keep them in place until they are stitched.

Another option is to place a tiny dab of instant dry fabric glue on the reverse side of the felt shapes and position them in place. I use Beacon Fabri-Tac glue for my felt crafts. Ensure you don’t place glue where you need to sew. It happens to me occasionally, and getting the needle through the dry glue gets difficult.

  1. Use the free candy swirl pattern to cut out all pattern pieces from felt. Visit the section above (Materials & Supplies for Candy Ornaments DIY) to learn how to download the free PDF felt pattern.

  2. If you want to hang the swirl candy as an ornament, sew or glue in a ribbon on top of the DIY felt candy.

  3. Join the two swirl candy pieces with a running stitch close to the edge. Leave opening for the filling.

  4. Fill the felt swirl candy with filling and close the opening with running stitch.

  5. Stitch the red felt piece (the swirl) with a whip stitch. I hold the felt shape with sewing clips to help myself while I sew. You could also use a tiny dab of glue. I did three stitches on the edges of the ornament, two stitches on the sides and one stitch in the middle.

How to Make Rolled Candies Ornaments

Next candy ornaments you can make are these fun felt candy ornaments. I call them rolled candies :) They remind me of licorice candies. I'm not such a fan of licorice candies, but my husband and my sister love them. These candy ornaments are easy to make. You just need felt, scissors, embroidery thread and needle, and glue.

  1. Cut long felt stripes, 12 inches (30 cm) long and 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide.

  2. Layer two stripes of felt on top of each other. Roll the layers of felt and glue as you go. Firstly, glue the beginning by making the first small roll (glue both edges of felt). Then, continue rolling and adding hot glue.

  3. When you reach the end, trim the ends to be equal and glue them together.

  4. Add embroidery thread if you want to hang the candy ornaments.

Candy Ornaments Wrapping

If you would like to make the candy ornaments wrapped, then follow these steps:

  1. Cut two felt shapes, one being 1 inch x 1 inch and the other one slightly smaller. Make a wavy edge on one side. I could have used pinking shears, but I totally forgot.

  2. Use tiny dab of adhesive to glue the upper felt shape to the lower one. I used the glue in the below corners only. Then add glue to the below corner (where there are no waves) and press the edges together.

  3. Glue the wrapping piece to the rolled candy ornament. Add glue to the bottom part of the wrapping piece and attach it to the ornament.
