Let’s create the next woodland finger puppet animal, a big eyes fox finger puppet, with this free pattern! Fox finger puppet is a seventh woodland finger puppet tutorial that I share. You already might have mole finger puppet, bear finger puppet, squirrel finger puppet, frog finger puppet, owl finger puppet, and hedgehog finger puppet. This fox craft can be used during homeschooling, in class, or at home. Finger puppets are a fantastic way to engage in learning by storytelling, acting, and practicing grammar.

Instructions follow to make the felt fox puppet. The finished puppet is approximately 2.8 ” (7 cm) tall. The puppet is made from scraps of felt.

Finger puppets are not recommended for children under the age of 3.

Three-strand embroidery floss and one-strand embroidery floss are used to embroider the fox puppet. Knot thread ends on the wrong side of felt.

Tips for Sewing Felt and This Fox Finger Puppet

TIP for sewing with felt: Explore the felt sewing tips to help you while sewing felt. You get to know what types of felt exist, what’s the best needle and thread for felt, how to trace on felt, and how to cut felt shapes.

TIP for holding pieces in place for sewing: Felt pieces can be pinned to the body shape to hold them in place until they are stitched.

Another option is to place a tiny dab of instant dry fabric glue on the reverse side of felt shapes and position them on the puppet’s body. I use Beacon Fabri-Tac glue for my felt crafts. Ensure you don’t place glue where you need to sew (I managed to do it this time, and it gets really difficult to get the needle through the dry glue :(.

TIP felt glue: Have you wondered what is the best felt glue? Find the findings of a test comparing 8 different glue for felt.

TIP for cutting felt: If you like to learn tips on cutting out felt pieces, you can read my post about 6 techniques for cutting felt shapes.

TIP tracing on felt: You are welcome to read how to trace on felt post if you want to learn more about transferring the pattern on felt for embroidery.

How to Make a Fox Finger Puppet

1. Use the fox finger puppet template provided to cut out all of the pieces from felt.

2. Pin or glue white tail to the back of body shape, following fox finger puppet diagram. Cut a length of white embroidery floss and separate one-strand. Sew whip stitch close to the edges on the tail to attach it.

3. Pin or glue white chest to the front of body shape, following fox finger puppet diagram. Cut a length of white embroidery floss and separate one-strand. Sew whip stitch close to the edges on the tail to attach it. You can opt for the running stitch if you prefer.

Leave the white thread without knotting it to continue with the eye attachment.

4. Pin or glue two white circles for eyes to the front of body shape, following the template. With one-strand white floss, sew whip stitch around the edges of the eyes to attach it. I do 8 whip stitches for each eye.

5. Transfer the mouth and muzzle to the fox puppet. There are a few ways to do that (check my previous post on how to trace on felt). I chose the tracing technique for this puppet.

I drew the template on tracing paper with a marker. I attached the tracing paper with pins, and then, I embroider the mouth and the outline of muzzle over the paper.

For the mouth and muzzle outline, use three-strand black floss and sew backstitch on the lines of the pattern.

Tear off the tracing paper at this point if you use the tracing technique.

Fill the muzzle’s outline with a satin stitch using the same black floss as in the step above.

6. Using the French knot, sew the eyes of fox puppet in position with three-strands of black embroidery thread. I wrapped the thread 3 times around my needle so that the knot is more significant.

5. Place the fox finger puppet’s front and back together and begin joining the pieces with a running stitch close to the edge.

6. Your DIY: fox finger puppet made with Fun Cloth Crafts free fox puppet pattern is ready for its happy owner.
