These Halloween finger puppets can also be made into ornaments by filling them with fiberfill and closing the below opening. If you are making Halloween ornaments, you can sew a ribbon or string into the top of the finger puppet to hang them later. These finger puppets can be given as a Halloween treat when filled with small candy.

General Instructions for DIY Halloween Finger Puppets
These Halloween felt finger puppets are easy to make. They are stitched entirely by hand, using a running stitch, backstitch, French knot, and whip stitch. Looking for a concise guide on embroidery stitches? Visit my article 9 hand embroidery stitches for felt to learn more.
Three-strand, two-strand, and one-strand embroidery floss are used to embroider the Halloween felt puppet. Knot thread ends on the wrong side of felt.
Tips for Sewing with Felt

TIP for holding pieces in place for sewing: Felt pieces can be pinned to the body shape to hold them in place until they are stitched.
Another option is to place a tiny dab of instant dry fabric glue on the reverse side of felt shapes and position them on the elephant’s body. I use Beacon Fabri-Tac glue for my felt crafts. Ensure you don’t place glue where you need to sew. It happens to me occasionally, and getting the needle through the dry glue gets really difficult.

felt scraps (find great felt at Benzie Design or find more buying options in the Types of Felt section of How to Sew Felt blog post): colors you choose to make the Halloween finger puppets, white and black for eyes
embroidery floss: matching colors to the darker tone of felt, black, white
small or embroidery scissors (KAI 5 1/2 inch Embroidery Scissors are the ones I use)
pins (optional - these are my favorites)
a glue that works on felt (optional - Elmer’s CraftBOND glue works well)
freezer paper (optional - Check out my tutorial to learn how to use freezer paper for cutting precise shapes from felt)
iron (optional - if you cut felt with freezer paper: I use Rowenta travel iron)
How to Make Fun Halloween Finger Puppets with Free Pattern?
The step-by-step Halloween finger puppet tutorial with the free pattern starts with more detailed steps of the bat finger puppet. It’s followed by the candy corn finger puppet with its three colors body piece. Then you find the steps for the black cat and spider finger puppets. If you are looking for the easiest finger puppet, it’s the ghost one. Next, the pumpkin finger puppet is the only one that uses a whip stitch. Last, the vampire and Frankenstein finger puppets with their hair shape.
DIY Bat Halloween Finger Puppet
Use the Halloween finger puppet template to cut out all Bat finger puppet shapes from felt.
2. Pin or glue (with a tiny dab) two circles for eyes to the front of body shape, following the template. With one-strand embroidery floss, sew a straight stitch around the edges of the eyes to attach it. I do eight stitches.
3. Using the french knot, embroider the eye pupils with three-strands of contrasting embroidery thread (white for black eyes and black for white eyes). I wrapped the thread 3 times around my needle so that the knot is more significant. The pupil should be in the middle of the eye.
4. Embroider the mouth to the puppet following the template. There are a few ways to do that (check my previous post on how to trace on felt). I chose the tracing technique for these Halloween puppets. Transfer the mouth onto tissue paper. Pin the transferred design onto the finger puppet’s body. Embroider the mouth with backstitch over the tissue paper. I use two-strands of embroidery floss. Gently remove the tissue paper. You can help yourself with tweezers or a pin if a small piece of tissue paper remains below the floss.
5. Following the template, glue the wings and ears to the bat finger puppet’s body. I found this the easiest way as I don't have to worry about the correct placement when sewing the finger puppet with a running stitch.
6. Pin the front and back finger puppet body before sewing. I keep the pins in for the first couple of stitches, then I take them out.

7. Join the front and back body piece with a running stitch close to the edge.
DIY Candy Corn Halloween Finger Puppet
Use the Halloween finger puppet free template shared in Materials & Supplies (section above) to cut out all of the Candy corn shapes from felt.
2. Sew the eyes on the white shape following the instructions above.
3. Hold the orange shape in place as per template. Sew upper and bottom edge of orange shape with running stitch.
4. Hold the yellow shape in place as per template. Sew upper and lower edge of yellow shape with running stitch.
5. Hold the white shape in place as per template. Sew the lower edge of white shape with running stitch.
6. Transfer the mouth onto tissue paper. Pin the transferred design onto the finger puppet’s body. Embroider the mouth with backstitch. Gently remove tissue paper.

7. Place the candy corn finger puppet’s front and back together and begin joining the pieces with a running stitch close to the edge.
DIY Black Cat and Spider Halloween Finger Puppets
The Black cat and Spider Halloween finger puppets have identical steps. I will show you the steps for the Black cat finger puppet. For Spider finger puppet, you follow the same steps.
Use the Halloween finger puppet free template shared in Materials & Supplies (section above) to cut out all Black cat shapes from felt.
2. Sew the eyes following the instructions above.
3. Transfer the nose, mouth, and whiskers onto tissue paper. Pin the transferred design onto the finger puppet’s body. Embroider the whiskers with straight stitches, mouth with backstitch, and nose with french knot. Gently remove the tissue paper.
For the spider finger puppet, embroider the mouth with the backstitch.

4. Place the black cat finger puppet’s front and back together and begin joining the pieces with a running stitch close to the edge.

DIY Ghost Halloween Finger Puppet
Use the Halloween finger puppet free template shared in Materials & Supplies (section above) to cut out all Ghost shapes from felt.
2. Sew the eyes following the instructions above.
3. Place the ghost finger puppet’s front and back together and begin joining the pieces with a running stitch close to the edge.
DIY Pumpkin Halloween Finger Puppet
Use the Halloween finger puppet free template shared in Materials & Supplies (section above) to cut out all Pumpkin shapes from felt.
2. Sew the eyes following the instructions above.
3. Hold the nose shape in place as per template. Sew whip stitch around the shape. Then hold the mouth shape in place as per template. Sew whip stitch around the shape. I help myself with a tiny dab of glue before sewing.
4. Following the template, glue the lid to the pumpkin finger puppet’s body.

5. Place the pumpkin finger puppet’s front and back together and begin joining the pieces with a running stitch close to the edge.
DIY Vampire and Frankenstein Finger Puppet
The Vampire and Frankenstein Halloween finger puppets have very similar steps. I will show you the steps for Vampire finger puppet. For Frankenstein finger puppet follow the same steps without the step 5 (wings attachment).
Use the Halloween finger puppet free template shared in Materials & Supplies (section above) to cut out all Vampire shapes from felt.
2. Sew the eyes following the instructions above.
3. Hold the hair shape in place as per template. Sew running stitch along the upper edge.
4. Transfer the mouth, and teeth onto tissue paper. Pin the transferred design onto the finger puppet’s body. Embroider the mouth with backstitch, and the teeth with straight stitches. Gently remove tissue paper.
5. Following the template, glue the wings to the vampire finger puppet’s body.
This step doesn’t apply for Frankenstein finger puppet.

6. Place the vampire finger puppet’s front and back together and begin joining the pieces with a running stitch close to the edge.
