Tips for Sewing the Lion Felt Sewing Pattern

Tips for Hand Sewing with Felt

TIP for sewing with felt: Explore the felt sewing tips to help you while sewing felt. In this comprehensive guide, you learn what types of felt exist, what’s the best needle and thread for felt, how to trace on felt, and how to cut felt shapes.

TIP for holding pieces in place for sewing: Felt pieces can be pinned to the felt shapes to hold them in place until they are stitched.

Another option is to place a tiny dab of instant dry fabric glue on the reverse side of the felt shapes and position them in place. I use Beacon Fabri-Tac glue for my felt crafts. Ensure you don’t place glue where you need to sew. It happens to me occasionally, and getting the needle through the dry glue gets really difficult.

Materials & Supplies for DIY Cute Felt Lion

How to Sew Felt Lion Sewing Pattern?

Download the free template, follow this tutorial's easy steps and photos, and learn how to make the felt lion plushie. It's an easy sewing pattern for beginners and kids.

  1. Use the free lion felt animal pattern to cut out all pattern pieces from felt. Visit the section above (Materials & Supplies for DIY Cute Felt Lion) to learn how to download the free PDF felt pattern.

  2. Draw the mouth onto the muzzle with the black permanent fabric marker. You can also choose to embroider the mouth with backstitch.

  3. Position the muzzle in place following the template and sew with the running stitch close to the edge.

  4. Glue the nose. Aleene’s tacky glue is great, non-toxic glue for felt.

  5. Trace the eyelashes. I made little holes with a needle on the lines and traced dots through the holes using a pencil.

  6. Draw the eyelashes with the black permanent fabric marker. You can also choose to embroider the eyelashes with backstitch.

  7. Using the technique in step 5, I made four marks with a pencil for each eye and cheek. This is to help with the right placement.

  8. Firstly, glue pupils to the eyes. Then, glue eyes and cheeks to the lion’s face. You can also sew them with running stitch or whip stitch appliqué.

  9. Join the front and back body parts with a running stitch close to the edge. Bear in mind that you need to keep an opening for the stuffing.

  10. In this step, fill the felt lion with stuffing.

  11. Close the opening with running stitch.

Now that you have sewn your cute DIY lion, will you make another safari animal? I also share a simple elephant felt pattern. And if you print this pattern smaller, you can make a lovely felt lion ornament.
