Tips for Hand Sewing with Felt

TIP for sewing with felt: Explore the felt sewing tips to help you while sewing felt. You get to know what types of felt exist, what’s the best needle and thread for felt, how to trace on felt, and how to cut felt shapes.

TIP for holding pieces in place for sewing: Felt pieces can be pinned to the body shape to hold them in place until they are stitched.

Another option is to place a tiny dab of instant dry fabric glue on the reverse side of felt shapes and position them on the puppet’s body. I use Beacon Fabri-Tac glue for my felt crafts. Ensure you don’t place glue where you need to sew (I managed to do it this time, and it gets really difficult to get the needle through the dry glue :(.

TIP felt glue: Have you wondered what is the best felt glue? Find the findings of a test comparing 8 different glue for felt.

How to Sew Felt Unicorn Finger Puppet?

Download the free template, follow the easy steps of this tutorial, and learn how to make the easy unicorn finger puppet from my unicorn pattern.

  1. Use the free unicorn puppet template to cut out all pattern pieces from felt.

  2. Glue the black pupil to the eye, glue the horn to the mane, and glue the ear to the body.

  3. Hold with a finger the white circle for an eye to the unicorn's front body part, following the template. With one-strand white floss, sew a whip stitch around the edges of the eyes to attach it. I do eight stitches.

Tip: You could use self-adhesive googly eyes instead of sewing the eyes. I would only opt for this option if older kids will use the finger puppet.

  4. Next, sew the mouth with a backstitch.

  5. In the last step, join the front and back puppet body parts with a running stitch close to the edge. Bear in mind that you need to keep opening at the bottom edge.

How do you like your finished unicorn finger puppet? I'm delighted with my cute pink unicorn :) This free pattern was on my to-do list for quite some time since I realized that the unicorn softie has a finger puppet shape (I had to make some adjustments to the unicorn toy template, though).

Step 1 - Cut out pattern pieces

Step 2 - Glue felt pieces together

Step 3 - Sew eye with a whip stitch

Step 4 - Sew mouth with a backstitch

Step 5 - Sew body parts with running stitch

Then, attach a piece of ribbon to the finger puppet when sewing the running stitch.
