Felt is a great material to use for this activity because it is soft, easy to cut, and comes in a variety of colors. Materials Required to Make Felt Shapes

You will need a few simple materials to make felt shapes. These include:

  • The felt shapes set pattern or you can create your own shapes

  • Felt sheets (in any color of your choice) (find great felt at Benzie Design or find more buying options in the Types of Felt section of How to Sew Felt blog post)

  • A pen or pencil to trace the shape on felt (optional)

  • A pair of sharp scissors

  • A ruler (optional) - to make rectangles, squares, etc.

Step-by-Step Tutorial to Make Felt Shapes for Toddlers

To make a felt shape activity, follow these simple steps:

  1. Choose the different shapes you would like to make and colors. These could include circles, triangles, rectangles, and more. It will depend on the activity you want to engage your toddler in. For two years old, choose larger shapes and prepare only a few of them. For older kids, choose more complex felt shapes activities.

  2. Cut out the shapes using a pair of sharp scissors. If you prefer, you can trace the shape onto the piece of felt first and then cut. If you are cutting the same shape again, you can use the felt shape and cut around it. As felt stitcks to felt, it might be easier than cutting the shape based on a paper pattern.

Felt Board Activities to Promote Cognitive Development in Toddlers

Shape Matching Game

This game is about choosing the shape, placing it in the correct outline, and aligning the shape as per the outline. To create this game, use a black fabric marker to draw the outlines of each shape. The outline becomes a guide to help your toddler stick and sort the shapes back onto the felt. If you prefer, you can use paper instead of felt as a base for the outlines.

Felt Shape Puzzle Activity

You can split the felt shape into pieces and create a puzzle activity. For smaller kids, you cut up to a maximum of four pieces. Let your kid grab the felt pieces and recreate the felt shape.

Ways to play with the Christmas tree activity:

  • Talk about the shapes while building the Christmas tree.

  • Play “find the shape” where toddler points at shapes you call out. You can also count how many of these shapes are on the tree.

  • Call out shapes and have your kid find that shape and add it to the tree.

  • Or practice colors by doing any of the above activities, but substituting colors instead. You could even make all circle ornaments, making them each a different color.

  • You can also play with sizes, asking which shape is bigger, smaller, etc.

Pizza Felt Shape Activity

The pizza shape activity is a fun game for little cooks. This activity uses circles to make the pizza base and then available shapes to add toppings. It encourages creativity and imagination while learning many other concepts.

  • Free play - leave all the felt pieces on the table and let kids make their own pizza freely. My kids did that when they saw the felt pizza on the table. They followed by

  • Making pizza based on an order - kids are asking what ingredients you want to include.

  • Making pizza based on a given set of instructions; can be shapes, colors, numbers, and sizes. For example, you could ask for 3 circle toppings, 1 red topping, and 1 small topping.
