Tips for Hand Sewing with Felt

TIP for sewing with felt: Explore the felt sewing tips to help you while sewing felt. In this comprehensive guide, you learn what types of felt exist, what’s the best needle and thread for felt, how to trace on felt, and how to cut felt shapes.

TIP for holding pieces in place for sewing: Felt pieces can be pinned to the body shape to hold them in place until they are stitched.

Another option is to place a tiny dab of instant dry fabric glue on the reverse side of felt shapes and position them on the elephant’s body. I use Beacon Fabri-Tac glue for my felt crafts. Ensure you don’t place glue where you need to sew. It happens to me occasionally, and getting the needle through the dry glue gets really difficult.

How to Sew Free Felt Elephant Pattern?

Download the free template, follow the easy steps and photos of this tutorial, and learn how to make the elephant plush from my elephant pattern.

  1. Use the free stuffed elephant template to cut out all pattern pieces from felt. Visit the section above (Materials & Supplies for Felt Elephant Softie) to learn how to download the free felt pattern.

  2. Glue toes to the elephant’s feet. Aleene’s tacky glue is great, non-toxic glue for felt.

  3. Position the trunk to elephant body using the template. The photo below shows you how to do it. Then, I hold the trunk and elephant body in my fingers, or you could use a tiny dab of glue.

  4. Sew the upper part of the trunk with a running stitch. You could also embroider it with whip stitch, if you prefer not to see the stitches.

  5. Use the elephant’s template to trace the eyes and mouth. I used a bigger needle and made holes in the eyes and mouth lines on the template. Then, place the elephant’s front body below the template. You can do so against light to see where the felt elephant's body is positioned. Lastly, use a pencil to mark the eyes and mouth through the holes in the template.

  6. Next, embroider the mouth and eyes with a backstitch. I used three strands of embroidery thread.

  7. Join the front and back body parts with a running stitch close to the edge. Bear in mind that you need to keep an opening for the stuffing.

  8. In this step, fill the elephant with stuffing.

  9. Close the opening with running stitch.

  10. If you want to add a tail to the back of the elephant, you can use six strands of embroidery floss. Get the embroidery floss through felt using a needle (don’t make a knot). Then, take the ends of the floss and make a knot.

  11. Split the two pieces of embroidery floss into three strands (each strand will have four strands). Now, braid the floss and make a knot at the end. This way, you’ll make the elephant’s tail.

Now that you have sewn your adorable elephant softie, will you make an elephant family? You could print the pattern smaller to make a baby elephant. The small elephant version of this felt elephant sewing pattern will also make a cute felt elephant ornament.

Step 1 - Cut felt pieces

Step 2 - Glue toes to feet

Step 3 - Position the trunk using the felt elephant template

Step 4 - Sew the trunk to elephant body

Step 5 - Trace the eyes and mouth to the body. Mark them with a pencil using little holes in the template.

Step 5 - Eyes and mouth traced to felt using a pencil.

Step 6 - Embroidery the eyes and mouth with backstitch.

Step 7 - Sew running stitch close to the edge, leave an opening for stuffing.

Step 8 - Fill the elephant with stuffing

Step 9 - Close the opening with running stitch

Step 10 - Use embroidery floss to make the tail

Step 11 - Make a knot first, then split the embroidery floss into three equal strands and braid it. Make another knot at the end of the tail.
