General Instructions DIY Mothers Day Kids Crafts

Gather the kids and create one or many adorable DIY Mother’s Day felt crafts. I have sorted the felt craft ideas by age (complexity), from the easiest to the more difficult ones. The first two gift ideas can be made with children as young as 3 years (with adult assistance, of course :). For the Mother’s Day gift ideas that require sewing, I would suggest that kids aged 6 and older can learn to sew with basic embroidery stitches. In most cases, kids will need adult support doing these Mother’s Day kids’ crafts’ unless they are old enough to read and already have crafting and sewing experience.

Basic Materials & Supplies that might always be handy to have at home

Felt

Glue (for kids felt craft, I used Elmer’s Craft Bond Fabric and Paper Glue, UHU Craft Glue)
Scissors (my favorite ones are KAI 5 1/2 inch embroidery scissors or KAI 6 1/3 inch patchwork scissor)
Sharp scissors for the cardboard or Exacto knife with Cutting board (Rotary cutting board for crafts); if you craft with cardboard the Exacto knife and the cutting board are excellent
Embroidery floss (DMC embroidery floss including hand needles)
Embroidery needle (Clover Embroidery needle)
Freezer paper sheet (if you look for precision in cutting felt - check out my tutorial 6 Techniques on how to cut out felt to find your favorite felt cutting method)

Iron (optional for freezer paper - I have Rowenta travel iron)

I've compiled a list of 11 adorable felt crafts that are suitable for kids of all ages, from toddlers to teenagers. These easy crafts range from simple projects for toddlers and preschoolers, such as felt flowers and felt hearts, to more complex sewing projects for older kids, such as felt heart keychains and heart paper clip bookmarks. 1. Easy Cardboard Heart Covered with Felt

What about sharing love with a homemade heart? The DIY recycled cardboard heart covered with colorful felt is a quick and easy kids’ craft. It’s an excellent kids’ project for toddlers and preschoolers. But older kids can also have lots of fun with it. Follow my free tutorial and make this cute kids' project.

2. No-Sew Felt Flowers

3. Felt Hearts Wreath Craft

Easy to do Mother’s Day Hearts Wreath gift will become a pretty decoration anywhere it is hanged. Inspired by the Valentine’s Day Heart Wreath Craft, my kids made the wreath with felt hearts. As the tutorial doesn’t include a stencil, I made my own felt hearts wreath template. You can find it in the Materials & Supplies section.

In brief, prepare the wreath base from a paper plate or cardboard (use the free template). Cut the felt hearts (you’ll need 9) and glue them on the cardboard. Finally, add ribbon to the back of the cardboard for the felt hearts wreath to hang nicely.

What if you surprise mom with an ‘I love mom’ or ‘MOM’ felt letter banner on Mother’s Day? The Mother’s Day DIY felt letter banner is a simple felt craft project to make and looks fantastic. Here go the steps on how to make a quick and easy ‘I love mom’ or ‘MOM’ felt letter banner.

Download and print the free ‘I love MOM’ felt letter banner template (to be found in Materials & Supplies section above).

Cut a length of string, yarn, hemp string, ribbon, or twine. Use mini craft clothespins to hang the ‘MOM’ letter shapes on the twine.
Hang the ‘MOM’ felt letter banner in the desired place. Visit my post on How to make an easy no-sew felt banner for suggestions on how to hang the felt banner.

The felt ‘MOM’ Sign in a Frame Mother’s Day gift idea that kids can make is adorable. I’m in love with it. It is easy to make and will melt mom’s heart. If you want to give such a frame present to mom, follow the steps on how to make the ‘MOM’ Sign in a Frame.

Get a letter or A4-sized frame that you like. I used an IKEA Fiskbo frame in pink color.
Stretch a bit larger felt piece across the frame’s backing board and place it in the frame leaving the transparent plastic or glass out. You can also opt for covering the frame’s backing board with a thick color paper sheet instead of felt.
Download and print the free ‘MOM’ Sign in a Frame template (to be found in Materials & Supplies section above).

Follow by gluing the felt letters onto the backing board or make a felt letter banner that you attach to the frame. For the DIY felt letter banner, cut a length of string, yarn, hemp string, ribbon, or twine. Attach the twine (I like this Jute twine rope) with tape at the back of the frame. Use mini craft clothespins to hang the ‘MOM’ letter shapes on the twine.

6. Felt Woven Heart Basket

What about giving mom or grandmother a sweet or another present in a woven heart basket? FirstPalette shares a free tutorial on how to make a woven heart basket.

Follow the tutorial tracing the template onto felt. Sew or glue the ends of a strip of felt onto the heart basket to make a handle. Fill the DIY felt heart basket with a small present to make an adorable Mother’s day gift.

7. Felt Heart Paper Clip Bookmark

This simple heart paper clip bookmark with a free pattern is one of my favorites on the list. Two of my girls, aged 8, tried the free Heart Bookmark pattern from Squishy-Cute Designs. It is an easy pattern to make and looks fantastic.

Cut the felt pieces. Visit the post on how to cut felt to learn different felt tracing and cutting techniques. Girls traced the free template on freezer paper. I ironed the freezer paper onto felt for them. Then, they cut out all the pieces. They can also trace the free pattern onto felt with a marker and cut it out.
I threaded the needle, made a knot (something to teach them), and started the first stitch in all steps to show them what to do. Then, the girls completed the sewing. My girls wanted a button in the middle. So before sewing the felt heart together with running stitch, they sewed the button on.

By the end of the project, the girls could make the final knot themselves.

As a mom, I am happy to have this heart paper clip made by my daughter.

8. Felt Heart Keychain

Cute heart Mother’s day gift that mom can always carry with her. It is one of my kids’ crafts tutorials and a nice first sewing project for kids. Follow the step-by-step tutorial from me for the felt heart keychain craft and give this cute felt heart Mother’s Day gift to the loved one.

9. Felt Bookmark with Flower and Heart

This felt bookmark is a perfect gift for any book of moms or her journal. Follow the youtube video DIY felt bookmark to make the adorable gift. 10. Felt Mini Donut Keychain

The next Mother’s Day gift idea is to create a donut keychain using Mini Donut Bag Charm free pattern.
